11/11/2023 0 Comments Utopia sprawl mtgI mean.where do I start? First of all, most UG builds rely on botanical sanctum, cavern of souls, breeding pool, and fetches for green sources. For every Death's Shadow Jund Josh Utter-Layton spikes a tournament with, he's bound to sleeve up a Bedlam Burn nine other times.Utopia sprawl is worse than vial in so many ways. One of the major differentiating traits between pros and FNM heroes is that the game's most successful aren't afraid of looking dumb. It really doesn't do yourself any good to stick with the status quo. I'll be the first to say I'm as guilty as anyone else for trashing ideas without testing it out too, but it's definitely something I work on and hope other do as well. Yeah, OP's asking us to be Devil's Advocate, but coming to this sub trying to flesh out an idea increasingly has become a great way to get discouraged. You think posting, "hey should we be playing Utopia Sprawl in more decks?" would lead people to brainstorm new ideas, but nope. Not to mention the idea of T2'ing a Company is nuts.Īs an aside, I gotta say the comments on these threads are always depressing. It may feel silly to replace BoP with a non-creature in a Company deck, but it's a pretty dumb thing to be concerned about when you think about it more. I'd be interested in testing it in a deck like GW Company, which really hinge on its threes. It's not like you have to play it in a deck with only fetches and lands with the Forest in the type line. It's probably worth testing in more base green decks. In addition, the Exalted effect is really useful in Eldrazi decks or decks like it. And since most Company decks are three colors, you'll have a hard time finding a Forest to enchant if you draw into it.Īlso, a word about Hierarch, because you mentioned it in the top: it might seem more limited than Birds, but when you think about it, most of the decks that use green to ramp are normally playing with white, too, which covers a fair amount of your bases. If you hit Sprawl with Company, you can't cast it. Birds can be cast by any green source, and while it is more vulnerable to removal than Sprawl, you don't need to limit your mana base to run it.Ĭollected Company also really wants to run Birds more than Sprawl because it's a Company hit. Granted, Utopia Sprawl can enchant duals like Stomping Grounds, but those, too, are in limited supply. The other decks in the list are three-color decks (I think you can argue that RG Eldrazi is three colors anyway), which means they have little room to run basic Forests over fetches and duals. The other three decks run Birds over Sprawl because of constraints in deckbuilding. Ponza already runs Utopia Sprawl, so the Birds is just more ramp. Ponza runs Birds for a fairly obvious reason: redundancy. Looking at mtggoldfish, the decks I saw running Birds were as follows (generally): I did some research and I think I have your answer: deckbuilding constraints.
